End of the Line?

February 24, 2011 in Hot Toy News

When I look back at the JLU line, I can’t help but be impressed. For a toy line that continued for over 5 years after the cartoon it supported ended, it’s done amazingly well. Yes, there have been quality control issues. Bad paint applications. Weak ankles. And the character choices are enough to drive us nuts. For every character we wanted but thought we’d never see (Amanda Waller, Lobo) there are the ones we wished we hadn’t (Disco Brainiac, Gold Booster).

Then of course there are the distribution issues. I’m past the point where I will assign blame. The fact remains, consumers want to buy the product. There is no product to buy, or the same product for months and months. Neither are acceptable in today’s retail market. Both Mattel and Target share the blame in my book.

But the line itself? Not since Super Powers has a line inspired this much passion in its fans. DCUC has admirers certainly, and the fact that they recreated the aforementioned Super Powers line (and even added to it) is incredible. But at least from my viewpoint, it doesn’t inspire the same type of devotion as JLU. The JLU line to me will always be my favorite. It has surpassed all of my childhood loves at this point. Star Wars, He-Man, Transformers, GI Joe, and yes even Super Powers all take second place to JLU for me. There’s just something about it that strikes a chord.

So why am i writing this? Part of it is to pay homage to the toy line that so many of us have enjoyed. But the other part is to answer some comments I saw on another site. That maybe the JLU had run its course. The poll results AFTER the top 10-15 were so skewed that maybe it WAS time to retire the line. So it got me thinking. Was there much left? Were there really that many characters still unmade? The answer my friends is a resounding yes. Just on a whim, I went in and started putting together a list of all the Timmverse – not just JLU – characters I’ve seen requested over the years. I took the model Mattel has given us for a “last hurrah”. One oversized figure (STRIPE) and one seven pack (assumed to be Gypsy, Dr Midnight, Creeper, Johnny Thunder, Thunderbolt, Crimson Avenger and Speedy). Just alternating them every other month, I was astounded at how far this line could go.

Now a disclaimer. I didn’t get to every single character. In fact, I’m sure there were several prominent ones I left out. They either didn’t fit in a pack, or they simply didn’t have enough of a tie-in to any of the animated series. I also realize that some of these may be stretching it in terms of saleability. I get that. But the point here is, there was still so much left to do. So get cracking Mattel. Here’s a road map for you. I even paired up the large figures with a corresponding seven pack.

So I went back after several requests and added a whole bunch more waves. I figured four more years tacked onto the end wouldn’t hurt. I tried to add just about everyone that was requested after my initial post, along with some I’d omitted myself. I also corrected a couple of the waves from the original post, and I think they fit even better the second time. I FULLY realize that the farther along it goes, the fewer people HAVE to have them. But if you’re going to do something, do it all the way. I’ve done that here, and I hope you enjoy.
