Captain Boomerang by Casimir

What was your inspiration for this custom?
Primarily the episode “Flash and Substance.” While I was pleased Mattel made a Captain Boomerang figure, why did they chose the outfit from his appearance of a few brief seconds rather than that of an episode in which he was a major character? Once again, the customizers step up to fill the gaps in logic.
How long did it take to make? Do you have any work in progress pics of it?
This one came together quickly, just a few hours across two days. That’s a rarity in my book! Sadly, no WIP photos for this one.
Were there any difficulties or problems in making this custom?
Two, in fact. The first was matching the color of the Question’s coat. As the coat was flexible vinyl, I didn’t want to paint it unless absolutely necessary. Plus, it was already the perfect blue, so why make more work? The blue of the sleeves and hat is not 100% spot-on (and I doubt it could be, with only standard pigments at my disposal), but it’s darned close. The second issue was pulling the coat back over the painted limbs. Didn’t want that paint to rub off! (Which it did, ever-so-slightly.)
Any secret tips you could share with us about this piece of art?
Don’t skip the details! Elvis8batman will catch your short cuts! (For which I am very thankful.)
If you were to give advice to other customizers, what would it be?
Patience! Start small, with repaints. And read about what others have done. There are so many folks who have come before these days, there’s plenty of knowledge to soak up. (As opposed to the pre-internet days, when the few of us only had fanzines and dangerous experimentation to rely on.)
How many customs do you have “on deck”?
Hmmmm… I’d say two that are officially started. (Do JLU paintings count?) And a small pile of Glassman and Stew castings to assemble and paint.
What got you into customizing?
What got me in customizing as we know it now (as opposed to repainting Drednoks in 5th grade) was a gentlemen known as Scooter. (Sadly, his site is not up at the moment.) I saw a photo of his BTAS Harley (long before there was an official one by Hasbro) in a long-forgotten toy collector magazine. This would have been some time in ’93 or ’94. I thought “I could do that.” And I did, though maybe not as nice as Scooter’s. (You can read more about this story here: http://www.pilliod.net/Pages/Articles/Scooter.htm)
Are there any customs you would like to do but you feel like your talent level might not be there yet?
Oh, so many! They all involve heavy sculpting. Just about any Timm-verse character that can’t be built off of standard parts.
Is there anything you like to add about your custom or COTM?
Just that the folks at Custom Justice are hands-down the best bunch of customizers collected in one place. I’ve seen the sites and forums come and go, and there is no place I feel more or comfortable. Thanks to you all.
